Swot Analysis Of Deutsche Post Ag Essay - 1940 Words
Industry Averages Through using Yahoo Finance I looked at the averages in the Air Delivery Freight Services industry. I found some interesting results. FEDEX had the best P/E ratio while the industry average was 32.80, Deutsche Post were ranked in 25th position just above UPS with 19.80 out of around 50 companies. UK Mail group had the best Price to Book ratio, the average being 12.70 with Deutsche Post ranked 22nd. The Forefront group had the best Net Profit margin the average being 3.80. Deutsche Post lagged massively behind with this ratio. UPS had the best return on equity. 21.80% being the average Deutsch Post came in 14th with 17.58%. It is somewhat worrying that Deutsche Post AGââ¬â¢s main competitors are leading the way in some of these ratios. The diagram below shows a 5 day comparison between Deutsch Post AG (blue line) and the industry Air Delivery (red line) (Source Yahoo Finance) SWOT Analysis Competitor Analysis The competitor I have chosen to compare to Deutsche Post AG is the United Parcel Service (UPS). The reason I have chosen UPS is that they are very similar to Deutsche Post AG in the service that they provide. Heathcliff the Byronic Hero Essay - 1333 Words
When one starts reading Wuthering heights Iââ¬â¢m sure they think to themselves that the book will be just another romantic novel. They wait for Heathcliff to come around the whole story, and for him and Catherine to end up together, but it doesnââ¬â¢t happen. This causes Heathcliff to get progressively, more and more alienated by the people around him. He only wants what he canââ¬â¢t have and this is why he is referred to as a Byronic Hero. It is my intention to prove Heathcliff as a Byronic Hero by classifying him under the six attributes of the archetype. The first major sign of a Byronic Hero is he is often alienated from humanity. In the beginning of the story Heathcliff is adopted by Earnshaw. Earnshaw eventually ends up loving Heathcliffâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When Hindley takes over Wuthering Heights he basically turns Heathcliff into a poor slave that wasnââ¬â¢t aloud an education. This classification is one of the main reasons that Catherine choose to marry Edgar instead. After she married she soon became pregnant. She gets very sick and 2 hours after the baby is born, Catherine dies. This is when Catherine truly becomes a forbidden love. Heathcliff is so devastated by her death that he shouts ââ¬Å"Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest, as long as I am living! You said I killed you ââ¬â haunt me then! The murdered do haunt their murderers. I believe ââ¬â I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always ââ¬â take any form ââ¬â drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I ca nnot find you! Oh god! It is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!â⬠Threw out the story you will see that Heathcliff has a very unhealthy passion; this is the next attribute of a Byronic Hero. This unhealthy passion is driven by revenge. As you read the book it seems that Revenge is the only thing that keeps Heathcliff going. Heathcliff returns to Wuthering Heights filthy rich after running away for 3 years when Catherine married Edgar. He uses some of his money to loan to Hindleyââ¬â¢s gambling problem so that Hindley will become even more engulfed into debt. Heathcliff also wanted to seek revenge against Edgar for obvious reasons. So heShow MoreRelatedHeathcliff As A Byronic Hero1104 Words à |à 5 Pages A ââ¬Å"Byronic heroâ⬠is a character who inherits the traits of being rebellious, anti-social, and presumptuous. Similarities Between Past And Present Heroes - 1899 Words
The comparison between past and present heroes can be defined in many different ways, depending on the person who is asked. Maybe someone who saves lives. Maybe a student who simply talks to a new kid at school. The range of views people see heroes as is what they make it. However, no matter how someone sees a hero, there s one universal thing in common; that person had made an impact on someoneââ¬â¢s life in one way or another. Scientists and surgeons, past and present, William Williams Keen and Benjamin Carson have been seen as heroes in the eyes of patients they ve operated on, scientists, and people of the public who are convinced that they have impacted the future of medicine forever. These men are considered as heroes in the eyes of society because of the many astonishingly significant contributions and breakthroughs both had on the world, and the obstacles they overcame before they could become the hero they were meant to be. Before Ben Carson was a 2016 presidential candid ate, he was once one of the most famous surgeons of his time with his most famous operation; he was the first person to ever successfully separate conjoined twins at the head. However, being a black man working as a surgeon in the late 1970ââ¬â¢s had some people twisted out of shape. Many people said it was ââ¬Å"a natural mistakeâ⬠for him to be working as a surgeon at this time (Davidson 33). It is the sixth largest economy in terms of the market growth and the third largest economy in terms of the purchasing power parity. Today, a large number of industries such as the telecommunication industries and automotive industry are growing in the country at a ve ry fast rate. Due to the significant economic growth of the country, a large number of multinational companies have also entered the Indian market. Several technological giants and manufacturing companies have entered the Indian market. These companies are operating in India as well as other nearby locations (Gesteland Gesteland, 2010). India is an industrialized country; therefore, the political and the economic environment of the country is also effective for supportive of the new business ventures. There is also an ongoing trend of startups and new business ventures which have strongly boosted the economy of the country. However, there are also significant socio-economic issues which are still persistent in the economy. The economic conditions of the country has improved in the recent years; however, there is still economic disparity and income inequality. The corruption in the country is also high as the illegal capital flow in the country is also high. There are also significant social issues related to bonded labor and the child labor in the country. It is also a culturally-rich location and has a long history in the philosophy, mythology and theology. It is rich in religious diversity and there are several major religions in the country, namely, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. The society of the country is characterized by its caste system which embodies social stratification and restrictions in the operations of the organization. The family values are important in the Indian tradition and multi-generation joint families are a norm here. The Indian customers are emotional in nature an d are concerned for their families. Most of the Indians get their marriage arranged with the consent of their parents. The choice and the preference of the customers are also influenced by their families and peers. In terms of sports, the country is crazy for cricket; however, other sports such as hockey, kho-kho and kabbadi are fairly popular in the country (Stephen, 2016). The customer market of the country is characterized by the growing middle-class and the purchasing power of the families. Recently, the ration of the working women has increased drastically which has increased the purchasing power of the families. People are spending more on luxury items and products. Other than that, the outgoing and the party culture has increased in the country drastically. The party and the drinking culture has increased in the country drastically. There is an extension in the wining and the dining culture of the millennial population with the rise in the income level (Dunung, 2015). The infrastructure of the country has also increased and the security issues for the women enjoying nightlife have also declined. Cultural Analysis of the Host Country India, officially called as Republic of India is a Southern Asian country and the member of Commonwealth of Nations. The Indians like living in joint families and culture and tradition are of utmost importance. They also have different standards of time and are likely to delay things from the deadline. Moreover, due to the bureaucratic nature of the government, several business features such as delivery, custom clearance, meetings, approval, transportation and payment takes time. Therefore, it is difficult to perform the punctuality in India. Other than that, the administrative and the physical infrastructure of the organization also impacts on the punctuality of the organization. These factors create delays in the operations of the organization. The culture and the heritage of India is quite unique and different from other countries. The religion, poverty and income distribution are the most sensitive subjects during communication; therefore, they should be avoided. Other than that, the Indians are not straightforward in nature. They avoid saying no to a specific person and tend to avoid the situation. Instead of saying outright no to someone, Indians use terms which are more acceptable such as maybe or they politely change the topic (Global Business Culture, 2017). They avoid maintaining an eye contact with the seniors or with women. Touch or any other form of physical contact is generally avoided by the Indians. It is due to the traditional shy nature of the society. The punctuality of Indians is always questionable. They appreciate punctuality; however, do not follow it. In Indian culture, it is important to engage in small talk and understanding the perspective of the partner. Engaging directly to the business issue can be considered as rude behavior (Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark, 2017). Other than that, the business structure and the operations of the organization are quite flexible. The companies are likely to take urgent tasks at the last minute. It is because of the flexible nature of the workforce (UK India, 2017). If the Indian culture is explored through different cultural dimensions, it can be critiqued that Indian culture is quite different from other cultures. It can be stated that the power distance in the Indian society is high. It means that Indians appreciate hierarchal structure in the society. Generally, the society has a top-down structure in the society. The power is centralized and the people have a habit of following the orders of their seniors. The psychological security and the attitude of the people with senior members of the society is also formal (Jondle Ardichvili, 2017). In families, the communication is directive and top-down in approach. The Indian society has collectivistic traits, which means that Indian prefers to live in a large social framework. In these frameworks, the individuals are expected to work for the greater good of different people in the group. In these situations, the individuals are influenced by the opinion of others, family members, neighbors and ot her member of social circle. Relationships are also given prime importance in the Indian society (Fischer, (2011). Due to the high population and the poverty, the competition in various sectors of life is also very high. The society can be characterized by competition, achievement and the success. Along with it, other factors such as caring for others and quality of life are also dominant in the Indian society. In the Indian society standing out from the crowd is not appreciated by the people. India is also a religious society and spiritual country. It has millions of deities and people follow different religious philosophies. It is an ancient country and has a long surviving tradition of cultures which increases the humility and the abstinence of the people living in India. It can be observed in the Indian society that the focus is on success and achievements and they are validated by the material gains. The work is the center of ones life and it is symbol of success at the workplace (Chandra, Rau Ryans, 2002). Business Culture of the Host Country The mentality of the managers and the employees is still different in India and the tradition is followed in most the business dealings. There are two types of companies in India, namely, family-run business and hi-tech corporations. As family hierarchy and age is given utmost importance in the country, the managers and the boss are treated like the supreme power. They do not perform the work which can be done by other people or the customers (Milligan, 2006). Most of the decisions are made at the top level of the organization and the middle-level as well as the lower-level of the employees have a significantly small part in the decision-making of the organization. The society has a hierarchal structure and the elder and the senior persons are greeted and treated with respect. There are two official languages in the country, namely, English and Hindi; however, English is commonly used as India is a diversified nation in terms of language (Girdham, 2009).). It is important to conduct small talk between the meetings and ask questions about the family. Generally, Indians give high importance to the use of formal titles and the business dress code comprises of smart and comfortable clothing. As the country has hot climate, the people wear comfortable and easy clothes. The business relations are of utmost importance to the people; however, their decision making style is different. They base their decision on trust and intuition rather than on the statistics and the data (Olivelle, 2011). Hierarchy plays a critical role in the Indian business culture. All the decisions, negotiations and other important aspect of the organization decision-making are conducted at a senior level. Therefore, if a business meeting does not include the senior managers, it is highly unlikely that the decision is going to be taken at that meeting. The bargain mentality is another important feature of the Indian culture and it is considered that Indians rarely declines a deal (Martin Chaney, 2009). It is important to have patience and perseverance so that each deal can be negotiated in the organization. Bureaucracy is also widely prevalent in India with a large number of government organizations engaging in corruption. There is also lots of delay in work with the widespread corruption and government bureaucracy. The Indian government is aware of the problem and working to ease the situation (Davis, Chatterjee heuer, 2006). On the other hand, the business culture in Singapore is quite different. Singapore is a multiethnic society which comprises of people from different origins. It includes Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities. The local customs of different societies have a great influence on the business style of the country. The people of Singapore are open and cosmopolitan in their outlook and have a great sense of humor. They do not take offense if a social faux pas is committed as they understand that people from different culture have different customs. In Singapore, it is important to avoid discussions regarding religion, racial issues and the politics. In Singapore, the working language is English; however, there are other official languages such as Chinese, Malay and Tamil (Kwintessential, 2017). There is significant proportion of Muslim and the Indian population in the country; therefore, it is important to avoid conducting business on Fridays or during Ramadan. It is also important that alcohol, beef and pork is not served during the business meetings. Other than that, contrary to the Indian population, the Singaporean population is punctual for their appointments and expect that the other party will be punctual in their appointments. There is also emphasis on gender equality in the Singapore society. In several places, women hold the position of authority in business. It is also important to establish relationships with the co-workers in Singapore. The dining and entertainment are an important part of the countrys culture and they are considered as the time when people socialize and build relationships (IOE, 2015). The Singaporean people have different communication style in comparison to the Indian people. The Indians have indirect communication style. They try to preserve the harmony, relationships and the pride with the help of indirect communication. The disagreement and negative responses are avoided specifically with the senior people (Visscher, 2007). The relationships determines the nature of communication between the people. The disturbing information is communicated in non-verbal manner or with the assistance of the third party. Hofstedes 5 Cultural Dimension Analysis Hofstedes models provides different dimensions which can be used to differentiate cultures of different communities. The model has stated that there are five different dimensions which creates difference in one culture from another. These dimensions are: power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance and long-term orientation. The power distance demonstrates the extent to which a society accepts the power in institutions and the powerful persons. It is the acceptance that the power is distributed unequally and it shows that the less powerful members of the society accept the norms imposed by powerful persons. The power distance is highest in Indian society, which shows the strong hierarchal structure of the society. The individualism-collectivism is another dimension which shows the difference between loosely knit social framework and the tightly knit social network. In the loosely knit social framework, people take care of themselves and their immediate family mem bers. On the other hand, the closely knit social network shows collectivism which states that people expect that their group comprising of the relatives, organizations and clans will support them in the future. In retrospect, they owe loyalty to these members of society. The third dimension in this model is masculinity-femininity which states encompasses qualities at the opposite side of the continuum (Hofstede Insight, 2017). The masculinity characteristic comprises assertiveness, attraction towards money, carelessness and quality of life. The Indian society is characterized by masculinity which shows that the population is competitive and more assertive. The fourth dimension of the Hofstedes model is uncertainty avoidance in which examines the extent to which a society feels threatened by uncertain and ambiguous situations (Kumar Pruthi, 2003). Career stability, formal rules and avoidance of uncertain situations are the best options for the situation. The ranking of the country is low which states that the people are more open to unstructured ideas and situations. The fifth dimension is long term and short term orientation: The long-term orientation are thrift and perseverance whereas the short term orientation are respect for the tradition and fulfilling social obligations. The long term orientation score of the country is high which shows that the culture is perseverant and parsimonious (Juhasz, 2014) . Conclusion It can be concluded that the culture plays a critical role in the business operations of a country. The culture of India is quite unique and different from other countries. The Indian population is family oriented and are influenced by their long history and culture. Other than that, the people of India are not punctual of their time and avoid saying no. They give indirect responses instead of direct negative response. The business values and system is heavily influenced by the traditional culture of the country. There is a hierarchal system in the family structure and there exists joint families. The decisions of the people are heavily influenced by the extended family members and the distant relatives. In contrast to it, the Singaporean population is very punctual. They also believe in hierarchal family system and the importance of giving respect to the seniors. In Singapore, senior professionals and employees are given utmost respect. They are also always on time and expect the ot her party to be on time. Therefore, it can be critiqued that it is important to understand the culture of different nation before establishing a business deal in that country References Chandra, A., Rau, P.A., Ryans, J.K. Investment Philosophy & Strategy of Portfolio-Samples for Students
Question: Prepare an Investment Portfolio Proposal Document to be Provided to the Client. Answer: Introduction Investment Philosophy and Processes are applied by the organization for achieving the following goals such as understanding the behaviour of investor, managing investor expectations, developing the procedure to be applied in Investment Portfolio (Achillas and et.al, 2015). Present report revolves around explanation relating to Investment Philosophy and Strategy in the case when investor have a high level of risk tolerance and an interested investing major portion of the investment in individual equity securities. The further presentation has been provided in the manner in which investment should be made in accordance with specified nature of the investment. The report ends up with the explanation regarding the manner in which investment component aligns with the overall strategy. Analysis Explanation of investment philosophy and strategy for the development of portfolio Portfolio management strategy assists in increasing profits by managing risk and required returns (Powell, 2015). A forceful strategy of investment force capital approval as a chief objective of investment, instead of principles income or safety. Aggressive strategies of investment are appropriate in the current situation. It is because their extended prospect of investment allows them to persist fluctuation in the market far better for short prospects of horizons by investors (Walker, 2014). In the present scenario, as the client is having high-risk tolerance and interested in investing a major portion of the investment in the equity of high cap companies (Bodie, Kane and Marcus, 2014). Thus, aggressive investment philosophy strategy will be applied for constructing the portfolio. By applying the same, the expected objectives will be achieved in an appropriate manner. Further, capital growth strategy will also be applied as it assists in maintaining the goal of capital growth which consists mainly of equities (Grndl and Gal, 2016). Active management is required by aggressive strategies of investment rather than conservatives, as it is possible to get more unstable and requires constant adjustment to cope up with changing con ditions of the market. Regular rebalancing is also needed to maintain allocations of the portfolio to their levels of the target (Yang, Narayanan and De Carolis, 2014). Thus, by applying the above philosophy strategies, investors will be able to attain expected gains. Description of portfolio components Table 1: Table representing percentage allocated to different investments in the portfolio Particular Amount Allocated % Individual equity securities $800000 40% Listed Investment Companies $400000 20% Equity market options securities or Future Contract $500000 25% Cash $300000 15% Total $2000000 100% Selected companies for direct investment Table 2: Selected companies for direct investment ASX Code Company Name GICS Sub-Industry Name Current share price Percentage Amount to be invested AGL.AX AGL Energy Ltd GICS Sub-Industry Name 25.00 30% $240000 CTX.AX Caltex Australia Ltd Multi-Utilities 31.26 20% $160000 DOW.AX Downer EDI Ltd Oil Gas Refining Marketing 6.18 15% $120000 RMD.AX Resmed Inc Diversified Support Services 10.11 5% $40000 IVV.AX iShares SP 500 Health Care Equipment 320.83 20% $160000 AGL.AX AGL Energy Ltd US SP 500 25.00 10% $80000 Total 100% $800000 Figure 1: Share price trend for selected companies for investmen Explanation Regarding the Manner in which Investment Component Aligns With Overall Investment Strategy Active management is required by aggressive strategies of investment rather than conservatives, as it is possible to get more unstable and requires constant adjustment to cope up with changing conditions of the market (Fischer and Schltter, 2015). Regular rebalancing is also needed to maintain allocations of the portfolio to their levels of the target. Thus, cash has also been kept in balance so that in case any requirement regarding purchase or sales of shares occurs for rebalancing the portfolio could be accomplished without any obstacles. Listed investment companies Listed Investment companies are referred as a viable and well-established alternative to managed funds as the same have considerable advantages. In the present scenario, six companies have been selected for the purpose of direct investment (Jagric and et.al. 2015). It can be observed from the graph represented above that all the companies have either increased or stable trend. As the companies belong to high cap group, the company will be able to attain higher profits. The company will also be able to achieve market diversification through investing in LICs. Investment in investment companies refers to providing funding to mutual funds as they are highly qualified and can make better investment decisions. Thus in order to get good returns, part of portfolio contains investment companies having a good reputation in Australia (Ferreira and et.al. 2013). For this purpose top, five companies are selected in which equal investment will be made of concerned category i.e. 20% in each company of $400000. Company Symbol Last Price 10-Year return Carlton Investments Limited (ASX: CIN) $31.49 9.7 WAM Capital Limited (ASX: WAM) $2.26 9.4 Australian Leaders Fund Limited (ASX: ALF) $1.52 9.3 Mirrabooka Investments (ASX: MIR) $2.82 8.2 WAM Research Limited (ASX: WAX) $1.52 6.7 Investment in equity options Investment in this option is wise strategy to protect, grow and diversified share portfolio to maximise wealth of shareholders. By considering this factor, 25% of portfolio amount is invested in equity market options securities and Future Contract. In this option, full value of contract is not to be paid on upfront basis and at the time of maturity of contract difference is price is to be paid (Bodie, Kane and Marcus, 2014). Investment will be done in Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) in SP 500 E-Mini (Sep '17) and 3 year Bond futures to ensure price stability and secured returns. Cash reserves Cash can be said as a key variant in the well-diversified portfolio, and a variety of objectives can be accomplished with same. These objectives comprise greater stability, potential inflation protection and diversification. Cash plays an important role in investors portfolio as it assists in creating liquidity as investors can withdraw it the same in a situation of market insolvency or closed stock exchanges, as making asset insolvency unattainable. Cash is kind of insurance policy; through which investor is independent to purchase assets and to pay out the bills when they are outstanding (Duchin and et.al. 2017). One more role of cash in investors portfolio which is considerably psychological. It can attach investor to the investment strategy by all kind of political and market conditions through offering peace to mind (Cardella, Fairhurst and Klasa, 2016). In situation; investors take a look at data sets; they can examine thoroughly historical instability outcomes for various comp ositions of the portfolio. Meaning full cash allocation provides stability for decreasing the down side risk. In the present scenario, appropriate 15% of investment has been kept as a cash reserve for accomplishing these objectives. Conclusion It can be depicted from above analysis that aggressive strategy is appropriate in case the company has high-risk tolerance capability. Further, in compliance with strategies of Donald Trump as it is expected that US economy has bullish nature; a major portion of investment has been made in equity investment so that maximum returns from same can be achieved. Further, a limited portion has been invested in listed securities so that some fixed profits from same can be attained. Investment has also been made in Future Contract; the amount invested so is safe and will be applied only in case higher returns are expected. A portion of investment amount has remained available as cash, and the same will be applied for reconstructing portfolio. It can also be utilized for attaining benefit by selling or purchasing shares. References Achillas, C., Aidonis, D., Iakovou, E., Thymianidis, M. and Tzetzis, D., 2015. Cialis case study * What r the most relevant dimensions along which to segment the patient market for ED market? * Demographic dimensions Age (60+ and 50-59 groups), Employment (full time and Retired), Marital status (married or living together), have sexual partner, yearly income (low for Europe and medium high for US), education (post graduate in US and primary secondary in europe) * Viagra dropouts ââ¬â people who discontinued to using Viagra. By end of 2001, 6 to 7 million Viagra dropouts compared to 3 million Viagra current users, which indicates a fertile market for cialis as a substitution to Viagra. Also Table B shows high willingness to try it across countries. * Compared to Viagra it provides more values like faster onset time, longer duration of effect, no side effects like in case of Viagra and lack of interaction with high-fat meals. (exhibit 10) * Comorbidities associated with ED * To whom it should be targeted for marketing: * Doctor As cialis is a prescription drug. Also Urologists and family doctors (exhibit 7a) * Patient As it is a ââ¬Å"quality-of-lifeâ⬠drug, doctor alone will not ensure success. Also, patient awareness about ED is also important. (exhibit 7b) * Partner of ED patient ââ¬â as partnerââ¬â¢s impact is high in perception (perceive the ED problem) and evaluation (intend to refill prescription) phases of HCTM. (exhibit 7b) * Print media (exhibit 7b) * Drugstore (exhibits 9b) * Of the segments identified, which would u target initially with cialis? * Viagra dropout * Demographic segments Age group of 50-59 and 60+ having sexual partner, either full time employed or retired, married or living together, in US mid and high income group and in Europe low income group * Urologist and family doctor * Devise marketing plan to launch cialis and anticipating competitive reaction. * Threat of new entrant ââ¬â high entry ââ¬Å"It is not like physicians wonââ¬â¢t be willing to prescribe Levitra and Cialis. And for end users, the switching costs are very low, particularly with sampling. Customers have had experience with Viagra, so there may be some reluctance to switch, but the switching costs are very low and could be almost zero. â⬠This meant that Viagraââ¬â¢s leadership position was easily eroded. There are also costs to being first that need to be considered. The first mover spends time educating and building the market, while competitors can then swoop in and ride on the pioneerââ¬â¢s coattails. New entrants try to make it easier for customers to switch. For example, all the drug companies distribute free samples to physicians that they can pass on to patients. This makes it very simple and cheap for users to try the new drugs without paying for a full prescription. http://executiveeducation. wharton. upenn. edu/ebuzz/0504/thoughtleaders. html All this naturally attracted the attention of rivals as well. Bayer/Glaxo SmithKline launched its own ED drug, Levitra, and Eli Lilly launched Cialis in 2003. Would these new drugs expand the market for everyone, given that only an estimated 13 percent of men thought to have ED were seeking treatment? While Pfizer publicly said competition was good for everyone, it still filed lawsuits to unsuccessfully block its rivals. The advertising war among the three drugs escalated steadily since the last quarter of 2003.

In his youth, Richard is vaguely aware of the differences between blacks and whites. He scarcely notices if a person is black or white, and views all people equally. As Richard grows older, he becomes more and more aware of how whites treat blacks, the social differences between the races, and how he is expected to act when in the presence of white people. Richard, with a rebellious nature, finds that he is torn between his need to be treated respectfully, with dignity and as an individual with value and his need to conform to the white rules of society for survival and acceptance. As a child growing up in the Jim Crow South, Richard is faced with constant pressure to conform to the white authority. However, even from an early age, Richard has a strong spirit of rebellion. The black community reacts to his rebellion disapprovingly, and Richard suffers intense isolation and loneliness during the early years of his life, feeling that he does not fit in or belong with his family or the black community. An example of Richardââ¬â¢s rebelliousness because of his attempts to gain respect and equality is shown when he is selected as the valedictorian of his graduating class and he is asked to deliver a speech. The principal calls him to his office and tells him to recite a speech that the principal wrote himself, saying that Richard needs to recite his speech because he is going to be speaking in front of white people and it is important to make a good impression. Richard, of course, refuses the principalââ¬â¢s speech and recites his own, despite the disapproving feelings of his peers and elders. Richard tells the principal, ââ¬Å"I know Iââ¬â¢m not educated, professor. But the people are coming to hear the students, and I wonââ¬â¢t make a speech that youââ¬â¢re writtenâ⬠(Wright 193). The Grimes migrate to the North in search of new opportunities. Elizabeth bids goodbye to her aunt in Maryland and leaves with Richard. She arrives in New York with great expectations but she is sorely disappointed. "Here, in this great city where no one cared, where people might live in the same building for years and never speak to one another, she found herself, when Richard took her in his arms, on the edge of a steep place and down she rushed, on the descent uncaring, into the dreadful sea." New York is a big and bustling city but it is heartless. The only way Elizabeth and Richard make their existence meaningful is by visiting places of interest in the city on weekends. They go to the Central Park or the Museum of Natural history to take their mind off from the daily drudgery. John Grimes does the same when he has to escape out of his dingy quarters at Harlem. He climbs a hill nearby to view New York in all its majesty and imagines himself to be an influential figure in the city. From there he walks over to mid-town Manhattan and Central Park to get a feel of the city. John experiences a sense of freedom in all the places outside his home at Harlem. His house was "narrow and dirty; nothing could alter its dimensions, no labour could ever make it clean. Dirt was in the walls and the floorboards, and triumphed beneath the sink where roaches spawned; was in the fine ridges of the pots and pans, scoured daily, burnt black on the bottom, hanging above the store; was in the wall against which they hung, and revealed itself where the paint had cracked and leaned outward in stiff squares and fragments, the paper-thin underside webbed with black." In similar quarters live Florence and other Negroes like her. If they look out of their window, they can see "scraps of paper and frosty dust, and - the hanging signs of stores and storefro...
